‘Hola y bienvenido’ to Colombia! A country rocked for many years by violence and political scandal, Colombia has dealt with its dark past and has become, today, a top South American destination. The reasons for visiting the country are many: an extraordinary natural and cultural diversity, breathtakingly beautiful colonial architecture, an eclectic musical scene and dance styles that feed the body and soul…A trip to Colombia is also about its people – warm, welcoming and willing to share the wonders of their cultural heritage with the rest of the world. What’s more Colombia is less frequently visited than its neighbours, so you can explore a natural paradise that’s avoided the negative effects of mass tourism. It’s an easy choice - if you’re looking for a Latin touch that’s both vast yet intimate, don’t wait any longer…Colombia’s the one for you!

Guide to travelling in Colombia

A tour of Colombia is a step into the unknown; a world of unexpected pleasures, be it on a street corner, as you head along a trail or at the end of long hike. Whether you’re wandering around its urban hubs or trekking across its expansive lands, you’ll be continually surprised by the hidden wonders you’ll meet along the way. Bogota, for example, is an ideal first stop. Stroll around the historic centre and the colonial quarter of Candelaria or take a break in its numerous little squares and parks. Then there’s Columbian music…what better way to perfect your salsa or cumbia dance moves? For those of you interested in pre-Columbian culture, then a visit to the Gold Museum, home to the world’s largest collection of gold exhibits, is a must! Once you’ve got a taste for the country, it’ll be time to hit the road and continue your trip back in time. There’s the colonial town of San Augustin with its nearby archaeological park, a minefield of monumental statues and sacred tombs, followed by the historic site of Tierradentro, home to mysterious, esoteric pyramids! If your thirst for knowledge remains unquenched, you can then head to Cartagena, Popayan or Cali. In fact, there’s so much to do during a trip that, to quote a local saying, ‘the only problem you’ll have in Colombia is not wanting to leave!’

Being close to the Equator, the climate of Colombia is rather uniform. The dry season lasts from December to March and should be preferred to avoid visiting Colombia in the rain. The wet season lasts from April to November, with very heavy rainfall. You should adapt your trip to these variations, as well as to the differences between the different regions: a tropical, and therefore very wet, climate in Amazonia, a harsher climate in the mountains and semi-desert in the Guajira. You should also avoid the weeks between mid-December and mid-January throughout country: they are very crowded with Colombian holidaymakers.

We enjoyed our trip to Colombia immensely. All our guides were very knowledgeable and friendly. A lot of history you can feel walking the streets. Visited Bogotá, Medellin and Cartagena. So very different and beautiful on their own. The food was great, the museums of Botero and the Museo del Oro top notch, and the opportunity to see how very violent neighborhoods have been able to be reborn in art and enterprise is fantastic. A unique experience. Definitely visit Colombia.

Bogotá was great as were the activities, Monserat and bike tour. The drives to Villa de Leiva and Barichara has some stunning scenery and the villages were beautiful. The hotel in pereira was was comfortable with a great garden jacuzzi! Medellin felt very international and the trips from there were also really good plus the city tour.
