Lake Assale, also known as Lake Karum, is located in the heart of the Danakil Desert, next to the Danakil Depression. It evaporates under the sun during the dry season and turns into a salt pit, to where camel caravans travel.

Lac Assale

Situated in the heart of the Danakil desert at the border of Eritrea, this active volcano is famous for its spectacular lava lake.

Erta’ale

This volcanic furnace located at 136.8 metres above sea level, on the border with Eritrea, is a multicoloured plateau with an unearthly appearance surrounded by salt mountains. You can also visit the salt caravans and salt mine.

One of the most famous towns in Ethiopia, known for its incredible rock cut churches.

Lalibela

The town of Sodo, not far from Shashamene and Awasa, is a fairly large town (90,000 inhabitants), located at the foot of Mount Damot, whose highest point is 2,743 metres.

Sodo is a stopover town on the road from Omo Valley after Shashamene, in the direction of <a href="/ethiopia/">Arba Minch</a> or <a href="/ethiopia/">Jinka</a>. I only stopped there to have lunch, and to be honest, there's nothing special to do there. There are a few hotels for those driving south, but stopping here isn't really essential as there aren't any tourist attractions.
If you have to make a stop, you ought to go to a local bar to see folk dancers and musicians. Sodo is a town known for its traditional Wolayta dances with large hip movements, as opposed to Amhara or North Ethiopian dances which involve moving the shoulders and the head.
